Akapuka ( Griselinia Lucinda) is found naturaly in the forest and coastal regions of New Zealand.It grows naturally as an epiphyte in the forest but also grows well as a shrub in cultivation. The plant has attractive large thick oval glossy green leaves and the male and female flowers are found on separate shrubs. In Autumn teh fruit ripens to a dark purple colour. Akapuka will tolerate growing with restricted roots and in amenity hegde planting is a very popular choice of discerning gardeners. The shrub is frost tender,growing best in full sun or semi-shade and is very tolerant of dry conditions and coastal winds. In your garden it provides a great source of feed for a variety of native birds.
